Nov 14–15, 2026

Five UAE cities.
One global hackathon.

NASA Space Apps Challenge comes to the Emirates. 48 hours, open NASA data, and a room full of people figuring it out together. Free, and open to everyone.

What is Space Apps?

A global hackathon

The world's largest annual hackathon: 190+ countries building with open NASA data over one weekend.

Anyone can join

Coders, designers, storytellers, students, teachers, hobbyists. No experience required — really.

Five UAE cities

UWR hosts five official Local Events across the emirates, each with its own venue and community.

Just released

The 2026 challenges are out

NASA has published 14 official challenges for this year's hackathon — from Earth science and AI to storytelling, games and design. Pick one, build it over the weekend with open NASA data.

Abandoned but not Forgotten: Storytelling about NASA's Discarded Equipment on the Moon and Mars

Since the 1960s, NASA has left hardware across the solar system–on the Moon, on Mars, and in deep space. From rovers and instruments that completed their science missions to probes still traveling away from Earth this hardware varies widely in both its purpose and current level of functionality. Your challenge is to tell the story of some or all of this equipment that introduces school-age space enthusiasts to the hardware and the science it made possible.

Be An Earth System Trend Detective!

Change is always occurring in the Earth’s interconnected environmental system, and when it runs in a consistent direction – rising or falling, increasing or decreasing, thickening or thinning – measured variables reflect it. But a variable can trend one way in one region and the opposite way in another, even when the same process drives both. Your challenge is to find and examine variables measured by NASA missions or produced by NASA models, visualize how they change over time, and determine what is changing, where it is changing, how much it is changing, and if these changes are what scientists call “significant.”

Build a Junior Astronaut Mission Trainer

Space-themed STEM content often oversimplifies the engineering trade-offs that define a real mission or presents them at a level too complex to hold a young learner's attention. Few tools make those trade-offs both tangible and fun. Your challenge is to design and build an interactive game or app that lets students run a lunar or Martian outpost, balancing competing demands like life support, radiation shielding, power, and food production, so they experience firsthand the decisions that determine whether a mission fails or succeeds.

The five-city cluster

How the community
actually runs

This cluster is initiated by the first Space Apps community of the UAE. We equip the execution of the programme end to end — hosting orientations, setting up bootcamps, providing mentorship assistance, and finally hosting the physical event so every emirate experiences Space Apps in full-fledged mode.

OrientationsBootcampsMentorshipLive event
  1. 01

    Orientations

We open each city with a free orientation session — what Space Apps is, how the weekend runs, and how to show up prepared even if you have never hacked before.

  2. 02

    Bootcamps

Hands-on bootcamps across the cluster: working with open NASA datasets, rapid prototyping, storytelling and pitching. Beginners and returning teams train side by side.

  3. 03

    Mentorship

Engineers, researchers, designers and educators from our partner communities are matched to teams for guidance before and during the challenge weekend.

  4. 04

    The physical event

Finally, all five cities host the full Space Apps experience in person on Nov 14–15 — one cluster, five venues, one global hackathon weekend.
